| Nashville is a city in the central part of the state of Tennessee. With a local population of over six hundred thousand, the area is also the capital of Tennessee. Although settled in the 1700s the city did not officially form until 1806. The climate of the area ranges from winter lows of around 36 degrees to summer highs in the low 80s. Area attractions include Old Hickory Lake, Warner Parks, Percy Priest Lake, Shelby Park, Fort Negley, Fort Nashborough, and the Hermitage. Local sports teams include the NFL football's Tennessee Titans, baseball's Nashville Sounds, hockey's Nashville Predators, soccer's Nashville Metros, and basketball's Music City Stars. The Tennessee State Tigers and Vanderbilt Commodores play nearby. The Tennessean is the area's newspaper. Entertainment, specifically country music is important to the area but Nashville also has a variety of businesses in the publishing, finance, healthcare, and insurance industries. Vanderbilt University and Medical Center with nearly 25,000 employees is the area's largest employer. Median family income is $49,000. Many higher education institutions are in the area such as Nashville School of Law, Belmont University, Nashville State Community College, Meharry Medical College, Gupton College, Fisk University University of Phoenix, and Vanderbilt University.
